Aster Muro

brief
Through Manchester School of Art, I joined three other students for a short placement with Aster Muro, a British studio specialising in abstract frescoes made using coloured plaster and spray technology. There we learned about their technical process and experimented with it ourselves.
The placement led to us supporting Aster Muro on a large-scale fresco at the Green Rooms in MediaCityUK. At 16 × 5 metres, the piece became the largest contemporary fresco in the UK, giving us the opportunity to take what we had learnt in the studio into a real installation.

Each of us created a 2 × 2m fresco, putting the techniques we had learnt into practice and getting a feel for how the materials behaved at scale. It was a chance to experiment freely with colour, texture, and composition.
We then helped produce a smaller test piece for the Green Rooms fresco before joining the team on the final installation. The piece explored the contrast between the energy of MediaCity and the quieter feeling of returning home, with the concept built around the ideas of “movement” and “reflection”. Being involved in the project gave me first-hand experience of producing large-scale public artwork.
