brief
aAh! is Manchester School of Art’s student-led arts and culture magazine, bringing together writing and creative work from across the university. I collaborated on two of its editions, The Freedom Issue and The Change Issue, each built around a broad theme explored through personal, cultural, and political stories.
My role was to design magazine spreads and social media assets assigned to me across two consecutive issues. I also developed cover proposals for both editions, which the contributors chose as the final designs for The Freedom Issue and The Change Issue.

The overall art direction for each issue was developed collaboratively by the design team before the individual spreads were assigned. My layouts worked within these established directions, adapting them to different types of content while keeping the magazine visually consistent.
The cover proposals gave me more freedom to explore each theme and try out different visual directions. For The Freedom Issue, I asked different people to describe what freedom meant to them in a word or two, turning their answers into the final design.
For The Change Issue, I used a chameleon and its ability to change colour as a metaphor for change. The freedom within the brief gave me room to experiment with different styles and techniques across the two covers.
